I Am Thirsty

"I am thirsty..."
John 19:28
It seems a little early for a picture of Jesus on the Cross, but I was so moved this morning during my devotional time.

IF:Gathering is preparing to gather together in one week and one day, and as we prepare our hearts for the gathering, we are studying WHO Jesus is.  And this "I AM" statement caught me off guard.

Why???

I sometimes forget how human Jesus was - and what that means.

Jesus was human - 100% human - completely and fully human.

He walked and talked and slept and ate just like everyone else.

He laughed with his friends and loved them deeply.

He cried and mourned over loss.

He begged God to deliver Him from the events that would take place only hours after the words left His lips.

And Jesus suffered and felt pain...and took on shame for us.

Although He was also fully God, which came with a few perks like healing the sick and raising the dead - Jesus still felt the emotions that we feel:
  • the heartbreak of deception
  • the reality of being abandoned
  • the hurt that came while He watched His mother watch Him suffer
  • shame
  • rejection
And all of these feels were on top of the excruciating pain of being beaten beyond human recognition.

Jesus is The Bread, The Light, The Way, The Truth, The Life - but He was also human - and in His humanness, He was thirsty.

Moments before He was delivered from this world of hurt into the battle in Hell, our King who left His throne in Heaven to be our Immanuel - our God with us - was thirsty.

It is hard for my heart to think of Jesus being this human, but He was, and this was the way it had to be.  However, I am also comforted in knowing that my Jesus has felt the hurt and pain and suffering that this world has to offer, and knows just how I feel.
