Do You Believe This - Martha's Story

It's sad to me that what most people remember or know about Martha is her initial exchange with Jesus concerning her sister Mary's laziness and her own high standards and strong work ethic.

First impressions are lasting!

But what really stood out to me in Martha's story was this "magnificent" declaration of faith!

It was difficult for most people to understand who Jesus was.  They were waiting for a King - the Savior - the Messiah - to come, but Jesus did not seem at all like the king they were expecting.

But at this moment, when Jesus says to his dear friend:

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Martha knew without doubt who Jesus was - and although she may have doubted what He was capable of, she had no doubts about WHO He was.

Martha has been labeled "the Doer," which is true, but this does not mean she was not a faithful follower and believer.  Maybe Martha put down the pots and pans and sat at Jesus's feet with her sister, soaking in His words, allowing them to penetrate into the depths of her heart.

Martha had a great faith in Jesus and she was not afraid to boldly proclaim to Jesus who He was.

Martha's story and her devotion to Jesus makes me look at my own faith.  Am I bold enough to proclaim who Jesus is?  Do I trust enough to really believe that nothing is impossible for God?  Do I know when it's time to work and when it's time to rest at the feet of my Savior?

Martha should not only be remembered for her shortcoming, but instead she ought to be known by her extraordinary declaration of faith!

And may we be encouraged in her boldness to answer Jesus's question:

"DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?"
